General Jerome Adams U.S. Surgeon General accepts that marijuana should be legalised but now takes one step further and claims that America should reclassify cannabis, writes Joseph Misulonas
Adams has proposed a number of statements advocating for a change in the classification of cannabis. Under current U.S. law cannabis is a schedule 1controlled substance meaning it has the highest possible restrictions on it. This classification makes it incredibly difficult to study cannabis, so people are not getting a full understanding of the drugs side effects and benefits says, Adams. He also raised issues about the criminal justice aspect of keeping cannabis a schedule 1 substance as well. “ Just as we need to look at criminal justice laws we need to look at health laws rules and regulations.” Adam’s said during a conference on drug recovery.
Adams statement comes at the same time as a recent congressional report that says the cannabis industry in the U.S. is worth around $11 billion and by 2022 will be worth $23 billion, but if the U.S. were to legalise the drug nationally the numbers would become even greater.
We must all remember
marijuana has been used in medicine by many cultures for thousands of years.
marijuana as a recreational drug has never caused a death by overdose.
marijuana while remaining a schedule 1 substance impedes research
marijuana while illegal has played an active role for the incarceration of much of our prison population
marijuana is not new and is not going away we should embrace it and learn from it
