Unlike many previous studies that have been focusing on cannabis and it’s the ability to treat chronic pain. This study aimed to see what happens when experimental pain was introduced. The researchers from Syracuse University conducted a systematic review of 18 placebo-controlled studies. There was appx. 450 participants using various forms of cannabis products, cannabis itself plus two synthetic cannabis-based drugs: dronabinol and nabilone. The studies found that rather than reducing the actual pain itself, ingesting cannabis made the pain more tolerable and less unpleasant, instead of clenching and moaning participants felt more at ease with what was happening to their bodies. Unsurprisingly the studies found that whole plant cannabis works far better than placebo synthetic drugs. If you think of pain as the noxious noise that comes from a badly tuned radio station, the volume is the intensity of the pain, after using cannabinoid drugs the station is still there but the noise is now clear and not so unpleasant.
